Schuyler Grant and Jeff Krasnos share the music behind the magic of Wanderlust

Music and yoga have long been soul mates, but building worldwide ecosystem around them as a foundation for more mindful living was the genius offspring of yoga teacher Schuyler Grant and music insider Jeff Krasnos. In 2009, the couple founded Wanderlust, at the time, a single event in Lake Tahoe. Now, with 70 events in 16 countries, the two bring as many as 120,000 people together through transformational movement and wellness events, and count a deliriously gorgeous outpost in Hollywood as HQ.

As part of our ongoing series on Work/Love relationships, I asked the Wanderlust founders about how they do it – in the office, at home, and out in the big, wide world. Here’s what Jeff had to say.

1. Tell us how your idea came to be – was it one of you or both – or did one recruit the other for the idea that you are now building together?
Well, 10% of a good idea is having it. I had the idea but the inspiration came directly from Schuyler and we were quickly aligned around it.

2. Tell us about your vision. What was your “why” from the start?
We’ve always been deeply drawn to creating intentional community around mindful living. Schuyler had been leading groups on transformational retreats to Costa Rica. In the depths of the Costa Rican rain forest, we asked ourselves: If we can bring 30 people to a faraway jungle, could we bring 3,000 people to a beautiful place closer to urban centers?

3. How do you divide / define your roles? Is there clear lane or title you each try to stay in?
We have completely different lanes. Schuyler is the national yoga director. She creates and leads the trainings, builds and maintains relationships with teachers across our events and our studios. I am on the strategic business side working on biz dev, partnerships and brand. From time to time, we collaborate creatively on a specific project, which is generally great fun.

4. And…how does that work? Are you both at every meeting or do you divide and conquer?
We have very different realms and are almost never in the same meetings.

5. What are your priorities as a couple – and in what order?
Healthy family. Healthy body. Healthy community. Healthy business. In that order (more or less).

6. How do you separate life from work – are you able to draw lines for “off” time or is the shared brain trust always churning? How do you manage this?
We don’t really believe in “work-life balance.” We believe in one holistic life where there is little separation between work and play, colleague and friend. We talk about “work” all the time because we are creatively driven by it.

7. Is your office space shared? How much physical space do you think supports a healthy love/work partnership (when people are together all the time it can either be fine or confining)?
We’re pretty free flowing. Schuyler spends a lot of time in the yoga studio. I’ve never been drawn to the idea of having a big office. I move around a lot – sometimes in the office, sometimes at our Hollywood center facility, often out and about at meetings. It’s a wonderful treat to have lunch together on the patio at our Hollywood center - although it violates my grandmother’s adage. My grandfather worked every day of his life until he passed. My grandmother pushed him out the door every morning saying, “I married you for life, but not for lunch.” I am lucky to have it both ways.

8. Sometimes employees or other partners have resistance to husband/wife teams because one is inevitably biased toward the other – so feedback is difficult to share. Has this ever been an issue and if so, how do you help people feel comfortable with you both as individuals who aren’t linked at the hip?
Schuyler and I had public, but civil, disagreements from the beginning of the business. Because we each have strong opinions, everyone on the team respects us as independent thinkers. Oftentimes, I will argue with Schuyler, but, slowly, over time, when her opinions are compelling, I tend to temper my opinions and move towards middle ground.

9. Where do you think one of you compliments the other, and vice versa?
Schuyler is the soul of the business. She prefers honesty and authenticity to scale.  I’m by nature a "scaler. "I like to realize big dreams. This balance allowed us to grow authentically, at the right speed.

10. How do you approach disagreements?
To be honest, we generally sweep it under the rug. And, mostly, when we pick up the rug, it’s all gone. We’ve been together for 30 years. You learn not to hold grudges, to disagree without being disagreeable. On the path to enlightenment is the ability to value other people’s opinion in equal proportion to your own. We’ve had the luxury of time to learn this lesson.

11. How do you celebrate wins?
The same way we celebrate losses. We go home, cook and read our kids to sleep. Once our kids grow up, I’m not sure what we’ll do. Maybe have more of them.
